Unlike standard USB flash drives or mobile applications, Ledger hardware devices run on a military-grade Secure Element chip (CC EAL6+ certified). This dedicated microchip is physically shielded against side-channel attacks, laser probing, glitching, and fault injections. The hardware isolates private keys entirely from your computer or smartphone operating system.
Powering the chip is BOLOS (Blockchain Open Ledger Operating System), proprietary firmware that isolates cryptographic applications from one another. If one asset application contains an anomaly, BOLOS prevents cross-app data leakage, safeguarding your master private seed and guaranteeing that unverified transactions can never be signed without manual physical confirmation on the device screen.
During the first initialization process, your Ledger hardware generates an offline 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase following the global BIP-39 cryptographic standard. These words represent the root seed from which all public addresses, account numbers, and private signing keys are deterministically derived.
Because your assets live on the decentralized blockchain rather than the physical stick itself, your 24 words serve as your ultimate backup. If your hardware is ever lost, stolen, or broken, entering your recovery phrase into a replacement Ledger device instantly restores full access to your funds without third-party intervention.
Legitimate Ledger representatives, engineers, and automated software will NEVER ask you for your 24-word recovery phrase, your PIN code, or direct access to your physical hardware wallet. Review these mandatory security principles before finalizing your installation:
• Never digitize your secret recovery phrase: Do not store it in cloud notes, password managers, photo albums, or send it via email.
• Pre-configured devices are counterfeit: Ledger hardware devices never ship with pre-printed recovery sheets or PINs already filled out.
• Always verify on the Trusted Display: Thoroughly cross-check target destination addresses and transaction amounts on the device screen before pressing both buttons.
• Use genuine companion software: Launch downloads strictly from verified URLs (ledger.com/start) and inspect browser certificates before proceeding.
